Goshiwon vs hasukjib — what's the actual difference?

They overlap in price and differ in character. The short version: a goshiwon is a building of strangers, a hasukjib is a household.

Goshiwon (고시원)
- Purpose-built block of small private rooms, 10 to 60 of them
- Nobody manages your life; you come and go unnoticed
- Kitchen shared, food staples usually stocked but you cook for yourself
- No deposit, monthly, leave with a month's notice
- 380,000 to 650,000 won

Hasukjib (하숙집)
- Usually a converted house run by an owner who often lives there, 5 to 15 residents
- Meals are the defining feature: traditionally breakfast and dinner, Korean home cooking, cooked by the 아주머니 who runs it
- More social by design — you eat at the same table as the other residents
- Sometimes house rules, occasionally a curfew, more of a felt presence from the owner
- 400,000 to 600,000 won, sometimes a small deposit

On whether the meals thing is outdated: it is less common than it was but it is real, and it varies. Some hasukjib now do breakfast only, some do neither and are effectively share houses. Ask specifically "식사 포함되나요?" before assuming.

For a language student specifically, the argument for hasukjib is the one nobody puts in the listing: you sit down and eat with Korean speakers twice a day. That is unstructured daily conversation practice, which is exactly what classroom students lack. Students who did a hasukjib often name it as the single best thing they did for their speaking.

The argument against: less privacy, less flexibility, and the atmosphere depends entirely on one person's personality. A good hasukjib is better than a good goshiwon; a bad one is much worse.

Hasukjib are also harder to find — fewer of them, rarely listed in English, mostly filled by word of mouth around universities.
