380k vs 550k goshiwon — what do you actually get for the extra 170k?

The listings look similar because they describe the same five fields. The 170,000 difference is almost always in things the listing does not have a field for.

What you are usually buying, in order of how much it matters:

1. A window. This alone is often 100,000 to 130,000 of the gap. A 380,000 room in a normal Seoul neighbourhood is usually an interior room.
2. A private shower and toilet in the room instead of shared down the corridor. 80,000 to 120,000.
3. Floor space. 4-5㎡ versus 7-9㎡. It sounds marginal and it is the difference between a suitcase living on the floor and a suitcase fitting under the bed.
4. Building age and condition. Newer buildings have better soundproofing, better ventilation and cleaner shared kitchens. This is invisible in photos and obvious in person.
5. Position in the building. Rooms next to the kitchen, the entrance or the laundry are cheaper for a reason.

What is usually the same at both prices: wifi, utilities included, rice and kimchi, no deposit, monthly terms.

The honest read on the very cheap end: a 380,000 room in Seoul in 2026 is typically windowless, shared bathroom, or in a building that has not been maintained. That is not a scam, it is a real product at a real price for people who want the cheapest possible bed. It suits some people fine.

What we would actually recommend: go and see both. Ninety seconds in each room tells you more than any listing comparison, and the difference is immediately obvious once you are standing in them. If you cannot view them, take the middle price — the cheap-end downside is much larger than the mid-range upside.

380 vs 550 in the same street: 380 was windowless with a shared bathroom, 550 had a window and its own shower. the listing described both as "furnished, utilities included"

building age is the hidden one. same price, one built 2019 and one built 1998. the soundproofing and the kitchen were nothing alike

i took the cheapest and it was genuinely fine for me because i was out 14 hours a day. it's a real product, just know what you're buying

fair. it's only a trap if you thought you were getting the other thing

if you can't view them in person, pay the middle price. the downside of the cheap end is way bigger than the upside of saving 170k
