What does a goshiwon cost per month all in? not the advertised number

The advertised number is usually honest for a goshiwon — that is one of the genuine advantages over other Korean rentals. But here is the full picture.

What 450,000 won typically covers:
- Rent
- Electricity, gas, water
- Wifi
- Shared kitchen staples: rice, kimchi, eggs, ramyeon, sometimes toast and coffee
- Cleaning of shared areas
- Bedding and basic furniture already in the room

What is genuinely extra, and this is the honest list:

1. Nothing, in most cases. Goshiwon pricing is all-in and there is normally no 관리비, no deposit, no agency fee.
2. Some buildings charge a one-off 10,000 to 30,000 won for a key card or a cleaning fee at the end. Ask; it is small but it should not be a surprise.
3. Aircon in a few older buildings is coin or card operated in summer. Rare now, but ask.
4. Laundry is sometimes 1,000 to 2,000 won a load rather than free.

So a realistic all-in monthly figure for a 450,000 won room is 450,000 to 470,000 won.

What actually catches people out is not hidden fees, it is the things the price does not replace:

- Food. The free rice and kimchi is real but it is not a diet. Budget 400,000 to 600,000 won a month for food.
- Not being able to cook properly pushes you toward eating out, which costs more than cooking would.
- Transport, 60,000 to 80,000 won.
- The first-week setup: toiletries, a drying rack, slippers, an extension lead, a decent pillow. 100,000 to 200,000 won once.

The two questions worth asking before you pay:
"관리비 포함이에요?" (is maintenance included) and "퇴실할 때 청소비 있어요?" (is there a cleaning fee on move-out). If both answers are no, the advertised number is the number.
