Yes, explain it — but a gap with work in it is one of the easiest kinds to explain. Four years of employment is not a red flag; four years of nothing documented is.

What consulates are actually screening for: whether your stated plan makes sense for your life. A 22-year-old who worked for four years and now wants to study Korean is a completely ordinary story. What they want to see is that the years are accounted for and that you can fund yourself.

What to provide:

1. A short paragraph in your study plan covering the years. Two or three sentences: what you did, roughly when, and why you are studying now. Do not apologise for it or over-explain.

2. An employment certificate from your employer or employers. Most countries have a standard form — dates of employment, position, and a company stamp or signature. This is the single most useful document.

3. Payslips or tax records if you have them easily. Not usually required, but they close the question completely.

4. If you were self-employed, a business registration or tax return does the same job.

5. If part of the gap was travel, illness, caring for family, or unemployment — say so plainly in one line. Consulates see all of these constantly. An honest short explanation is treated far better than a vague one.

What causes problems is not the gap itself but inconsistency: a study plan that implies you came straight from school while your documents show four working years, or dates that do not line up between documents.

One useful framing: your file should let an officer reconstruct your last decade in two minutes without asking a question. If it does that, the gap is a non-issue.
