I turn 18 two months after the semester starts — problem?

Not a hard no, but it needs handling before you apply, not after.

The situation:

1. Most university language programs set 18 as the minimum, and many define it as 18 at the time the program starts, not at the time you apply. Being 17 for the first two months is exactly the case they wrote the rule for.

2. Several schools will accept a student who turns 18 during the term with a parental consent form and a guardian arrangement. It is a documented exception, not a favour, and it goes through the international office.

3. What they typically ask for: a notarised parental consent letter, a designated guardian in Korea (sometimes the school itself, sometimes a relative, sometimes an agency), and occasionally a housing arrangement they approve of — often the dormitory rather than private housing.

4. The visa side is separate. A D-4 for a minor usually requires the parental consent documents to be apostilled, and the consulate may ask about supervision arrangements. Build in extra time for this.

What to do: email the international offices of the specific schools you are considering, state your date of birth and the term start date, and ask directly whether they accept students who turn 18 during the first term and what documentation they need. Do this before you pay any application fee — policies differ by school and the answer you get in writing is the only one that counts.

The practical alternative if a school says no: start with the next intake, when you will be 18, and use the intervening months on TOPIK prep or online classes. Two months of waiting is far cheaper than an application that gets voided at the visa stage.
