Can I switch from tourist entry to a D-4 visa inside Korea?

I'm already in Korea visa-free. Do I really have to fly home to apply for the student visa, or can I change my status here?

Sometimes yes — but don't plan on it.

Changing status inside Korea (from visa-free or a tourist entry to D-4) is possible in some cases and immigration decides case by case. It depends on your nationality, how you entered, and the office you go to. Some students manage it; others are told to apply from their home country.

The reliable route is the normal one: get your admission letter from the school, then apply for the D-4 at the Korean embassy or consulate in your country.

If you're already here and want to try the in-country route, do it early — you need the school's admission documents in hand before immigration will look at it, and appointment slots fill up.

Worth knowing: if your country has a visa-free agreement, one 10-week semester fits inside the visa-free period, so a first semester without any visa is a real option.

Did the one-semester visa-free route. Zero visa paperwork, just flew in with the admission letter. Great way to test if you actually like living here before committing to a year.
