Is a goshiwon actually livable for 6 months or just for emergencies?

Plenty of students do six months in a goshiwon. Whether it works depends much less on the room and much more on which goshiwon and what you need from home.

Be honest with yourself about three things:

1. Window or no window. An interior room is 100,000 to 150,000 won cheaper and it is the single biggest regret we hear. In December, with sunset at 17:20 and no daylight in your room, it wears on people. Pay for the window.

2. Private bathroom or shared. Shared is fine in a well-run building and miserable in a badly-run one. Visit at 08:00 if you can — that tells you everything.

3. Whether you need to host people. You cannot have friends over. For some students that is the deal-breaker by month three, not the size.

What you get for 450,000: rent, utilities, wifi, and usually rice, kimchi, eggs and ramyeon in the shared kitchen. No deposit, no contract, no key money, and you can leave with a month's notice. For a first semester while you learn the city, that flexibility is worth a lot.

The common pattern: one semester in a goshiwon while figuring out where you actually want to live, then a one-room or share house from semester two, once you have an ARC, a bank account and a sense of neighbourhoods. That order is much easier than committing to a two-year lease from abroad.
