How early do you actually need to apply?

The deadline is real, but it is a backstop, not the target. Apply 2 to 3 months before it.
Why earlier is genuinely better, and it is not just caution:
1. Class places do fill. Popular programs and popular levels close early, and once a level is full you are on a waitlist regardless of the published deadline.
2. Dormitory applications usually close before the school application deadline. Apply late and the dorm question is decided for you.
3. The visa pipeline runs after your admission. Admission letter, then the school's CCVI application to Korean immigration, then your consulate appointment. That chain is 6 to 10 weeks and it starts only once your file is complete. A July deadline for a September term leaves no slack at all.
4. Peak-season congestion. Everyone applying at the deadline means immigration and the consulates are slowest exactly when your file arrives.
5. Document problems. Roughly half of applications need something corrected — a wrong apostille, a missing transcript, a name mismatch. Applying early means a correction costs you a week; applying at the deadline means it costs you the term.
So for a September term with a July deadline: aim to submit a complete file in April or May, with apostilles started in March.
On "first come first served": partly. Most programs assess on a rolling basis rather than reviewing everything after the deadline, so an early complete application gets a decision early. There is no advantage to waiting and no scoring benefit to applying at the last moment.
One caveat in the other direction: applying more than about six months out can be too early at some schools, because they have not opened the intake yet and a bank certificate has a validity window. Around four to five months before the term is the practical sweet spot.

You can still post anonymously after signing in.applied 3 weeks before the deadline, everything was fine paperwork-wise, and still got my visa 4 days before the flight. the deadline leaves zero slack for the visa chain

dorm applications close before the school deadline at most universities. that alone is a reason to be early

found this out the hard way. by the time i was accepted the dorm was long gone

my file had a name mismatch between my passport and my diploma. cost 3 weeks to fix. if i'd applied at the deadline i'd have missed the term entirely

don't go too early either. i tried 7 months out and the intake wasn't open, plus my bank certificate would have expired. 4-5 months is the sweet spot

yeah the bank certificate validity window catches the over-eager

rolling assessment at most schools. applying early literally just gets you an earlier answer, there's no downside
