Is Sogang really that much better for speaking?

The reputation is real and it is also older than the current reality. Both things are true.

What is genuinely different at Sogang: the program was built around communicative teaching, and it still leans that way. More pair work, more task-based speaking, less time spent writing grammar tables. Students who want to talk from week one tend to be happier there, and the difference is most noticeable at beginner and lower-intermediate levels.

What is genuinely different at Yonsei: more structural grammar coverage, more writing, a heavier textbook. Students heading for TOPIK or a degree program often prefer it because the foundation is more explicit.

Where the internet is out of date: every major program has moved toward more speaking over the last decade. The gap in 2026 is much smaller than the forum posts from 2014 suggest. Korea University, Ewha and Konkuk all have strong speaking components now.

What actually determines your speaking ability, in order:

1. Whether you speak Korean outside class. This is the whole game. A Sogang student who goes home to an English-speaking flatshare will lose to a Yonsei student with a Korean roommate, every time.

2. Your specific teacher. Variation between teachers within one school is larger than the average variation between schools.

3. Your class's nationality mix.

4. The school's method.

So pick on the things you can actually verify — location, schedule, tuition, dorm availability, whether it fits your visa timeline — and treat the method difference as a tiebreaker rather than the deciding factor.

If your priority genuinely is speaking above everything else, Sogang is a reasonable first choice. Just do not expect the building to do the work for you.
