Airport SIM for the first night is fine and worth the small premium. But do not stay on a tourist eSIM.
The distinction that matters: a tourist eSIM gives you data. A SIM registered in your own name with your passport gives you a Korean number tied to a verified identity — and that identity check is what Korean banking apps, Naver, Kakao, government sites and your school portal actually require. Many services will not verify you on a tourist product no matter how well the data works.
So the sequence:
1. Airport, 10pm arrival: buy a prepaid SIM at the arrivals counter. Slightly overpriced, but you leave with working data and a Korean number at 10pm, which is worth it. Around 30,000 to 55,000 won for a month.
2. Make sure it is registered in your own name, exactly as on your passport. Ask explicitly. This is the whole point.
3. Within your first week, if the airport product was a data-only tourist SIM, replace it with a properly registered prepaid SIM from Chingu Mobile, EG SIM or KT M mobile.
4. Once your ARC arrives, convert to a postpaid contract at a carrier shop and keep the same number. Ask for plan conversion — it is a routine request. Contracts are cheaper per month than prepaid.
On keeping the number: yes, it carries over, provided you registered the original SIM in your own name. A number on an unregistered or third-party SIM does not transfer, and that is the situation to avoid.

same trap. everything looks fine until you hit identity verification and then nothing works

airport counter at 10pm, 15 minutes, walked out with a working korean number. worth the extra 10k not to be offline on night one

register it under your passport name EXACTLY. middle names, order, everything. banks match it against your ARC later and a mismatch means starting over

this bit me. my middle name was on the passport but not the sim and the bank refused

prepaid is more expensive monthly but it's only until your ARC. don't over-optimise a 3 week problem

kept the same number through prepaid → contract with no issue. just do it at the same carrier
