Which area to live if I study in Sinchon?
i want to be close enough to walk or short bus, but every close place is either expensive or a shoebox.
is it worth living 20-30 min away for a better room? or does the commute kill you when class starts at 9

For Sinchon specifically, the sweet spot is 10 to 20 minutes, not 5 and not 40.
The areas students actually pick:
1. Sinchon and Changcheon-dong. Walking distance, most expensive, smallest rooms. Everything is open late and you will never be bored, which is either the point or the problem.
2. Yeonhui-dong and Yeonnam-dong. 10 to 20 minutes by bus or a long walk. Quieter, noticeably nicer rooms for the same money, cafes everywhere. This is where most students end up after their first semester.
3. Hongdae. One subway stop or 15 minutes on foot. Louder and pricier, but if you want the social side it is right there.
4. Mapo, Gongdeok, Ahyeon. 15 to 20 minutes by subway, meaningfully cheaper, much more residential and much less student-focused.
On the commute question honestly: a 9am class with a 30-minute commute means leaving at 08:15 in a Seoul winter, five days a week, for ten weeks. Most people underestimate how much that costs them. Seoul transport is excellent and 30 minutes is nothing by local standards, but a 9am start changes the maths.
My actual advice: under 25 minutes door to door, and prioritise a room with a window and decent heating over being 5 minutes closer. And check where the bus stop is, not just the subway — in Sinchon the bus is often faster.
One practical thing: walk the route on Naver Map with the time set to 08:15 on a weekday before you commit. The estimate at 14:00 on a Sunday is not the same trip.

seconding yeonnam. also it's calmer which matters more than you think when you're studying

i lived 40 min away to save 150k a month and i regret it. the winter mornings broke me by week 5

same. 150k is like 4 dinners out. not worth an hour of your life every day

counterpoint, i commuted 35 min and used it to review vocab every day. depends on the person

living IN sinchon is fun for about 6 weeks and then you'd kill for a quiet street. just my experience

check the hill situation. some places 10 min on the map are 10 min straight uphill and that's a different 10 minutes

the bus in sinchon is genuinely faster than the subway for most short trips, people forget it exists
