Finding a gym / hobby group that isn't awkward in Korean
i want to keep training but i'm nervous about signing a contract in korean and getting stuck in a 12 month membership.

Gym contracts in Korea are usually prepaid blocks, not rolling subscriptions, and that is good news for you.
How it works:
1. You pay upfront for a period — 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. Longer blocks are cheaper per month. There is no auto-renewing direct debit that traps you.
2. Typical prices: 50,000 to 80,000 won a month for one month, dropping to 35,000 to 50,000 a month if you buy six. University gyms are cheaper again, often 30,000 to 40,000, and many are open to language program students — ask, because a lot of students assume they are not eligible.
3. A one-month trial first is completely normal and nobody will find it strange.
4. Registration is usually just your name, phone number and payment. Some ask for an ARC. Bring a translation app for the form; the vocabulary is short and repetitive.
The thing to actually watch: personal training packages. PT is sold in blocks of 10 to 30 sessions, upfront, and this is where the pressure is. Prices are 50,000 to 100,000 won per session. It is legitimate but it is a sales conversation, and refunds are governed by a rule most students do not know — you are entitled to a partial refund for unused sessions minus a cancellation fee. Say you want to think about it. Any gym that will not let you is a gym to leave.
For hobby groups where foreigners actually go: climbing gyms are the standout — cheap, everywhere, and the activity does the talking. Beyond that, look at university clubs (many accept language program students), Meetup and Facebook groups for Seoul, running crews, and the language exchange meetups that run in Hongdae and Gangnam most weeknights.
Honestly, a climbing gym or a running crew solves the gym question and the loneliness question at the same time, which is a better deal than either alone.

watch out for the PT upsell. i got talked into 20 sessions in my first week and it was 1.4 million won. good trainer, but i was not ready for that conversation in korean

you can get a partial refund for unused sessions by law. a lot of people don't know that and just eat the loss

university gym was 35k a month and 4 minutes from class. check if your program gives you access, mine did and i didn't find out until term 2

buy one month first. i signed 6 months at a gym i then realised was a 25 min walk away and went four times

there are hiking groups everywhere and koreans take hiking extremely seriously. great way to meet people who aren't students
