Goshiwon near Korea University — is Anam the only option?
starting at KU's language centre. everyone says anam but the prices there look similar to sinchon.
is there anywhere slightly out that's cheaper and still an easy commute

Anam is the obvious answer and it is not your only one. Here is the map around KU.
Anam-dong (안암동) — right at the campus, dense goshiwon supply, 450,000 to 600,000. Walkable, lively, and priced for the fact that every KU student wants it.
Better value within an easy commute:
- Jegi-dong (제기동) and Cheongnyangni. One or two stops on line 1, or a 15-minute walk. Noticeably cheaper — often 380,000 to 500,000 for the same room. This is the single best value near KU and the one students find in their second term rather than their first.
- Hoegi (회기). Between KU and Kyung Hee, so it is a student area with student prices and a lot of cheap food. 10 minutes by subway.
- Sinseol-dong / Dongmyo. A little further, cheaper again, and a straightforward line 1 or 6 ride.
- Bomun (보문). Quiet, residential, 15 minutes on foot or a short bus. Underrated.
On why Anam looks similar to Sinchon: it is the same product with the same demand. Being adjacent to a big campus is what you are paying for in both places, and the premium is roughly the same.
What to avoid: nothing specific in this area, but check the hill. Anam has some steep sections and a room described as 8 minutes can be 8 minutes uphill.
The practical recommendation: look at Jegi-dong first. It is one stop, the price gap is real, and the area has a proper local market and cheap food, which matters more day to day than being 6 minutes closer to a building you are in for 4 hours.

jegi-dong. one stop from anam, 100k cheaper, and the market there is great for cheap food. korean students do this, foreign students mostly don't know about it

hoegi if you want maximum cheap food. it's between two unis so the whole area is priced for students

anam is fine and convenient, you just pay for it. term 1 in anam, term 2 somewhere cheaper once you know the buses is a common path

check the hill in anam. some of it is genuinely steep and it changes the walk in winter
