Language school → university degree, how does that path work?

It is a well-worn path and the language school helps more than you might expect — but the university application itself is separate and you drive it.
How the path works:
1. Reach TOPIK 3 for many undergraduate programs, 4 for most, 5 or 6 for competitive ones and for humanities. Engineering and science programs are often more lenient; anything taught in Korean with heavy reading is stricter.
2. Realistic timeline: TOPIK 3 is typically reachable after finishing level 4 at a language program, so roughly 4 terms, one year. TOPIK 4 usually needs level 5 or 6, so 5 to 6 terms.
3. Apply to the degree program while still in your language program. Applications open roughly 6 to 9 months before the semester starts, so you are applying during your third or fourth term.
4. Visa: you change from D-4 to D-2 once admitted. It is a status change, not a new application from abroad, and it is straightforward with an admission letter.
Where the language school genuinely helps:
- If you attend that university's own language program, you often get an internal advantage: some universities give preferential consideration, waive the application fee, or accept their own institute's level certificate in place of or alongside TOPIK. This is a real reason to choose the language program attached to the university you want the degree from.
- Your language institute's certificate and attendance record become supporting documents.
- The international office knows the process and will point you at deadlines.
What you handle yourself: the actual application, the personal statement, the documents from your home country (which need apostilles again), and the TOPIK registration.

did the language program at the university i wanted the degree from. they waived the application fee and accepted my institute level 6 alongside topik. that continuity was worth a lot

not every uni does this but enough do that it's worth asking before you pick a language school

topik 3 after 4 terms is about right if you work. i got 4 after 5 terms. don't believe anyone who says 2 terms is enough for topik 4

chinese and japanese speakers do it faster. everyone else, plan for 5-6 terms to topik 4

apply during term 3-4. the deadlines are 6-9 months ahead and people miss them because they're focused on class

you need apostilled documents from home AGAIN for the degree application. i thought the ones i'd sent for the language school would carry over. they did not

get extra apostilled copies the first time. this is the second time you'll wish you had

D-4 to D-2 change is done inside korea, no need to fly home. one immigration visit with the admission letter
